Year 3 Launch of the Chewing Gum Task Force

The UK’s Chewing Gum Task Force is a collaboration between major chewing gum producers like Mars Wrigley and Perfetti Van Melle. Together, they’re committed to eradicating gum litter from UK high streets and preventing future instances of littering.

Administered by the independent charity Keep Britain Tidy, this initiative involves the chewing gum firms investing up to £10 million over five years to achieve two primary goals: cleaning up existing gum staining and promoting behavioral changes to encourage more people to dispose of their gum properly.

Councils across England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales can now access grants of up to £27,500 this year, a 10% increase from last year’s funding, to purchase cleaning equipment and facilitate street cleansing efforts. Additionally, each council receives fully-funded gum litter prevention packages, including tailored signage and guidance, courtesy of the social enterprise Behavior Change.

Through a combination of targeted street cleaning and strategically placed signage encouraging proper disposal, participating councils have already witnessed significant reductions in gum littering—up to 80% within the first two months, with sustained improvements observed even after six months.

In the previous year, 55 councils across the UK benefited from this special grant fund, collectively cleaning an area equivalent to the size of the Vatican City, with total funding amounting to £1.65 million.
